Art – Years 7 to 9
Introduction and Overview
- Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of responding to the world.
- Students use colour, form, texture, pattern and a variety of materials and techniques. Drawing is a strong element of both KS3 and KS4 courses.
- Students explore the work of artists, craftspeople and designers and learn about craft and design in different times and cultures.
- Key Stage 3 course
Year 7
- Colour Theory: Mixing and blending techniques, composition, Henri Rousseau
- Mark Making Techniques: Monotone, 3D outcome, Bridget Riley
- Impressionism: Oil pastel blending, collaborative work, Impressionist movement.
Year 8
- Portraiture: Proportion in the face, drawing techniques, collographic plates, Chuck Close.
- Abstract Expressionism: Composition, glass painting, Kandinsky, Delaunay, Malevich, Vasarely.
- Cubism: Collage, mark making, Picasso, Braque.
Year 9
- The figure, glazing techniques, End of Key stage 3 Assessment.
- The figure: Life drawing, clay and slab building techniques, Antony Gormley, Picasso
- Stoneware Tiles: Glazing techniques, clay, natural form, Arts and Crafts movement.
Extra curricular
- Art club, all years

How to support your child
We are sure that you already do many of these things to support your child but here is a useful reminder for you to refer to:
- Encourage wider reading of Artists and Craftspeople
- Ask them what they have learnt today
- Help them to structure homework tasks
- Encourage the practise of drawing skills
- Provide a range of drawing pencils (B and Darker)
